The biggest problem with super thin modern TVs is that there is no space for decent speakers. They are usually tucked behind the panel and point behind the TV which makes no sense at all. This has opened the market wide-open for a new category of speakers, the soundbar. Today we’re reviewing the Playbar by SONOS, dubbed the gold standard in multi-room home audio.
The SONOS Playbar is well designed, featuring 9 internal speakers designed to flood the floor with full theatre sound. The design is understated and thoughtful, inline with the SONOS design ethos, with its smooth black veneer with an aluminum strip at the base part of the Playbar. The Playbar is designed to be multipositional allowing you to either place it on a table top at an angle, flat on a table, or mounted on the wall, underneath your television.
Recently there have been a lot of different soundbars that have made it’s way to market, however the SONOS playbar differentiates itself in several ways. One unique feature is that the Playbar is able to connect to your home WiFi network by using the free SONOS app that can be downloaded on your phone or tablet. The great thing about this is it allows you the flexibility to add to your home audio and sound system in the future with the SONOS subwoofer or any of the the Play speakers.
You can create a 3.1 home theatre system by pairing PLAYBAR with the SUB, or a full 5.1 home theatre system with a PLAYBAR, SUB and any two PLAY speakers. The playbar connect easily to your TV through an optical cord from your HDTV to the Playbar. This Playbar is also programmed to understand and respond to your television remote’s IR signal, allowing the settings to be easily adjusted without having to stand up from your couch.
The SONOS app is well designed and easy to navigate allowing you to control speakers from every room and any device. If you connect your Playbar with a sub and speakers in the same room or other rooms you can use your smartphone, tablet or computer to stream different songs in each room, group rooms together, or hear the same beat everywhere.
The SONOS app allows you to listen to all the music you love, no matter where it lives. You can connect the app with your Apple music, Spotify, Pandora, Soundcloud and much more. Personally I use Spotify and the experience is seamless. Imagine coming home, whipping out your phone, pressing play on your SONOS app and then hearing your favourite tunes in any room you wish. That’s what SONOS does.
The SONOS Playbar retails for $997 which is on the high end compared to other soundbars.
The Rare Gent Verdict
The SONOS Playbar is a premium home audio product that combines, sound quality, design and functionality making it one of the best options on the market. It carries a premium price tag but in my opinion the flexibility the Playbar or any SONOS speaker offers with the ability to use wifi to connect and build up your audio system over time makes it well worth it.
